Becher Grid

This week we learned about Becher Grids. Hilla and Bernd Becher took the photos of the similar objects photographed from the same viewpoints. I tried to do this with my photos using keyboard keys loosely laid on the same background. I chose to do it in black and white to give it a different look than if I would have shot it in color. Some of the keys appear to be different sizes because the camera was either zoomed in closer or farther away. Also, the shadow from the light in the room appears to the left in all photos because I stood in the same spot for each.

Even though each photograph is slightly different they are similar in the fact that they are each keys, photographed alphabetically, symbolicalizing unity.

I started to make the grid by figuring out the dimensions needed, since the height of the photos were 722 I needed it to be 722 x 722 for each. This required my overall grid to be smaller than the standard 4000 x 4000. My grid size is 3388 x 3388. After cropping, centering the photo and adjusting the levels to be slightly brighter, I placed it on the grid. Making sure to have a 1 inch boarder on all sides I lined up each additional photo until I had a completed 4 x 4 grid.

I could not have done this without Professor Davis' help over Blackboard. I had trouble figuring out why my photos were not looking like everyone else's and I could only fit 3 into a row, that is because I was trying to make them 875 x 875 and since the height was only 722 it was stretching and distorting my images. Long story short, 6 hours later, multiple YouTube tutorials, two melt-downs, and three emails, I was able to finally finish. :)

PHEW-- what a week.
